Learn to dive

The 'Learn to Dive' or Open Water Diver course will qualify you to dive anywhere in the world.  Designed for complete beginners as well as those who have already undertaken a 'try dive', our Open Water courses train you in the theory, procedures, equipment and safety measures necessary to enjoy scuba diving.

At Dive Experience our courses are run to strict International and Australian Standards. In fact we are one of only a few stores Australia wide accredited to train in accordance with the Australian Quality Training Framework.

What this means to you is that all of our staff are highly trained and constantly audited to assure you are receiving the best training possible. Our guarantee to you is that we will strive to make you a COMPETENT, CONFIDENT, and SAFE diver whilst having the time of your life in our amazing underwater world.

Courses are generally held over two evenings and two weekends or 4 days full time, starting at our 'State of the Art' Maidstone facility and finishing at Port Philip Bay’s historic seaport of Queenscliff. When you have completed your Dive Experience Open Water course certification, you are immediately qualified to dive unsupervised, with a qualified buddy, initially to 18 meters, in a diving environment similar to that in which you were trained.
There are no hidden extras; the course fee includes use of the most up-to-date quality SCUBA gear, all diving, air fills, course materials, logbook, instruction, and certification.

To learn to dive, you need to be reasonably fit and comfortable in the water. You will need to be able to swim 200 meters with no time limits. You also need to be aware that certain recurring illnesses may prevent otherwise fit people from SCUBA diving and it is essential that a diving doctor checks that you are OK.

If you are not passed as fit for diving, we will refund your course deposit.

A Dive Experience Open Water SCUBA course is a complete course that will gain you an internationally recognised SCUBA qualification while you have fun in the water.

Dive Experience SCUBA instructors are some of the most highly qualified in the World, well experienced and fully accredited.

What do I need?
For reasons of hygiene each participant is required to have their own snorkeling equipment consisting of Mask, Snorkel, Fins and Dive Boots. We stock a large selection of these personal items and as one of our students you will receive preferential pricing on all purchases during your course.

To qualify as an Open Water diver, you need to be medically fit and able to swim 200 meters in any style with no time limit.
Above all, you need to be comfortable in the water, enthusiastic about learning to dive and prepared to make the effort to learn new skills.
As diving can be physically demanding sport, you need to be fit! It is essential that your lungs, ears, sinuses and circulation be in good shape.

Certain recurring illnesses such as diabetes, asthma or a history of heart trouble may prevent otherwise fit people from SCUBA diving. Because of this, you must have clearance from a doctor that you meet the requirements of AS4005.1 as fit to dive.

A list of doctors is available from the shop, or at the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society web site www.spums.org.au
